How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating: The Complete Care Guide

So you’ve just invested in a professional ceramic coating in Vancouver — congratulations! Now the question is: how do you keep it performing at its best for the full duration of your package? At Drippy Customs, we give every customer this guide after their coating is applied. Follow these steps and your coating will stay looking incredible for years.

The First 7 Days Are Critical

Right after your ceramic coating is applied, the curing process begins. During the first week you must:

  • Not wash your car at all for at least 7 days
  • Keep your car out of the rain if possible for the first 48 hours
  • Avoid parking under trees where sap or bird droppings could land
  • Do not apply any wax, sealant, or other product over the coating

The coating needs time to fully bond and harden. Disturbing it during this period can affect the final result.

How to Wash a Ceramic Coated Car

Washing is the most important part of ceramic coating maintenance. Here’s exactly how to do it right:

  • Always hand wash — Never use an automatic brush car wash. The bristles will gradually degrade your coating.
  • Use pH-neutral soap — Regular dish soap or harsh detergents strip the coating over time. Use a dedicated car wash soap labeled pH-neutral.
  • Use the two-bucket method — One bucket with soapy water, one with clean rinse water. This prevents dirt from being dragged back across your paint.
  • Use a clean microfibre wash mitt — Never use sponges or old cloths that can trap dirt and cause scratches.
  • Dry with a clean microfibre towel — Or use a leaf blower to blow water out of crevices before drying.

How Often Should You Wash a Ceramic Coated Car?

Every 2–4 weeks is ideal for Vancouver drivers. The hydrophobic properties of your coating mean dirt doesn’t bond as strongly — so washing is faster and easier than before. Don’t let contaminants sit too long though, especially bird droppings and tree sap.

What to Do About Bird Droppings and Tree Sap

Even with ceramic coating, bird droppings and tree sap should be removed as quickly as possible. Their acidity can etch through the coating if left for extended periods. Use a quick detailer spray and a clean microfibre cloth to remove them gently as soon as you notice them.

Do You Need to Wax a Ceramic Coated Car?

No — and you shouldn’t. Wax sits on top of the coating and can actually interfere with its hydrophobic properties. Your ceramic coating IS your paint protection. Skip the wax entirely.

Annual Ceramic Coating Maintenance Service

We recommend bringing your car back to Drippy Customs once a year for a professional inspection and maintenance detail. We’ll decontaminate the surface, do a light polish if needed, and apply a ceramic boost spray to refresh the hydrophobic properties. This keeps your coating performing like new year after year.

Signs Your Ceramic Coating Needs Attention

  • Water no longer beads up and rolls off easily
  • The paint looks less glossy than when first applied
  • Dirt seems to be sticking more than before

If you notice any of these signs, bring your car in and we’ll assess whether a maintenance service or reapplication is needed.
